Those big, bold dreams that make your heart skip a beat.
My real strategy was hope. I guess I was praying that if I kept myself busy enough, my inner critic would just disappear one day.
Except hope and quick-fixes weren't cutting it. They were amazing band-aids that temporarily relieved my issues; they gave me respite and a break from myself. But my limiting beliefs and ineffective behavioral patterns always bounced back. Every time they reared their ugly heads, they added more fuel to the fire of proof that I wasn't capable of changing my life.
Eventually, I hit rock bottom with my mental health and decided I was no longer going to be a prisoner of my mind.
When it comes to your career and life goals, I believe you have the power to choose your own destiny.
But not everyone finds forging their own path to be straightforward. Many of us get blocked. Our internal narratives, belief systems, or learned patterns of behavior get in the way. They sabotage, mislead, and distract us from fulfilling our full potential.
The key is self-awareness and choosing self-mastery. This realisation is where my story begins.
For a long time, I felt stuck. My entire way of living was run by my inner-critic, who was abusive and told me I would never be successful. My inner-critic was a protection mechanism that I had built as a result of an unstable childhood and tough teenage experiences. I got used to living with my inner-critic, and that voice stuck around.
Due to my life experiences, I felt like I lacked the ability to change my life, and I was using quick-fixes to solve my issues (hedonic partying, fad cleanse, and everything in between).
I started studying how successful people thought and behaved. Specifically, successful entrepreneurs and elite athletes. I spotted trends between these groups - self-awareness, discipline, self-belief, committed to their field, and took action. At the same time, I found amazing therapists, healers, EFT practitioners, and coaches.
I started to see a new model of how life could look, which blew my mind that there was another way of existing.
I then studied what action and behaviour I'd need to take to take these new models and implement them in my life. I would take these ideas into sessions with my practitioners and understand how to close the gap between where I was, what I needed to heal, and where I wanted to be.
I was working on overcoming internal narratives, changing how I felt about myself. I could change the critical talk track which would allow me to change my behaviour and ultimately become successful.
I used to ask myself daily, "What action would the wealthiest, happiest version of me take?"
Over time through self-mastery, deep work, and healing, I started to release my inner-critic, learn to trust myself, and proactively choose the life I wanted. Being able to proactively choose my life and career led me to soul-searching and figuring out what I actually want to do.
The answer - become an executive coach, which led to me building my business.
I created my wildly successful life and career.
Launching the business I dreamt about, staring my inner-critic in the eye and making peace with her, moving to Mauritius, New York, and then back to London, building healthier relationships with good boundaries, buying a house that I NEVER thought I'd have the funds to be able to.
